Established in 1948. Upgraded in 1969,1987. Renamed in 1991,2003

This institution has undergone several name changes: from Taiwan Provincial Taitung Teachers School to Taiwan Provincial Taitung Teachers Junior College, then to Taiwan Provincial Taitung College, and afterward to National Taitung Teachers College, these were committed to cultivating outstanding teachers for elementary education and kindergarten. In August 2003, National Taitung Teachers College was upgraded to the National Taitung University.

National Taitung University is a comprehensive university consisting of three colleges: Teachers College, College of Humanities, and College of Science and Engineering. Under these colleges, there are eight departments with undergraduate programs, five departments with undergraduate/masters programs, one department with undergraduate/masters/doctoral programs, and four graduate institutes with masters and/or doctoral programs. Currently there are around 3000 students on campus but it will expand to include twenty-five departments with 5,700 students in within ten years. Apart from its current campus, a new one of 60 hectares (approximately 150 acres) is now under construction in Chihpen, Taitung County.

Based on the leadership of former Presidents and all the efforts made by our faculty and staff for many years, National Taitung University has endowed upon its students, a solid foundation for excellence. In the future, we will continually work towards our goal of becoming a diversified comprehensive university. With a balanced development of the three colleges, National Taitung University will accomplish its mission of preparing outstanding students for society and pursuing excellence in academic areas.
